RESUMO Desde tempos remotos, a pelagem é valorizada no agronegócio equestre.

Chronobiologic blood pressure assessment: Maturation of the daily rhythm in newborn foals Biol. Res.
PICCIONE,GIUSEPPE; ASSENZA,ANNA; FAZIO,FRANCESCO; GIANNETTO,CLAUDIA; CAOLA,GIOVANNI.
Circadian rhythmicity of physiological processes in animals has been described for some variables. In order to investigate the daily rhythmicity of blood pressure, seven foals (Equus caballus) were used for 40 days after birth. Measurements of blood pressure were done by means of an oscillometric apparatus (Argus TM-7, Schiller, Barr Switzerland) with the foals in a standing position and the cuff placed around the tail. Blood pressure was recorded twice a day, 1 hour before dawn and 1 hour before dusk for the first 10 days of life, every 2 days from the 11th to the 32nd day, on the 36th and on the 40th day. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine statistically significant differences between the mean values recorded at...

Comparison between circadian motor activity in pony and horse RChHN
PICCIONE,GIUSEPPE; GIANNETTO,CLAUDIA; MARAFIOTI,SIMONA; CASELLA,STEFANIA; CAOLA,GIOVANNI.
In this study we investigated the influence of body mass on the daily rhythm of total motor activity in ponies and horses. Six clinically healthy Shetland pony breed with a body mass of 180 ± 30 kg and six healthy horses Sella Italiana breed with a body mass of 530 ± 20 kg were used. Animals were equipped with actigraphy-based data loggers, Actiwatch-Mini® to record total activity. The application of two-way ANOVA showed a highly significant effect of time of day and body mass on motor activity. Cosinor analysis identified the periodic parameters and their acrophases during the two days of monitoring. Mesor and amplitude were statistically higher in horses than in ponies and no statistically significant differences was found about acrophases and...

D-loop haplotype diversity in Brazilian horse breeds Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ianella,Patrícia; Albuquerque,Maria do Socorro Maués; Paiva,Samuel Rezende; Egito,Andréa Alves do; Almeida,Leonardo Daniel; Sereno,Fabiana T. P. S.; Carvalho,Luiz Felipe Ramos; Mariante,Arthur da Silva; McManus,Concepta Margaret.
Abstract The first horses were brought to Brazil by the colonizers after 1534. Over the centuries, these animals evolved and adapted to local environmental conditions usually unsuitable for exotic breeds, thereby originating locally adapted Brazilian breeds. The present work represents the first description of maternal genetic diversity in these horse breeds based on D-loop sequences. A D-Loop HSV-I fragment of 252 bp, from 141 horses belonging to ten Brazilian breeds / genetic groups (locally adapted and specialized breeds) were analysed. Thirty-five different haplotypes belonging to 18 haplogroups were identified with 33 polymorphic sites. Haplotype diversity (varying from 0.20 to 0.96) and nucleotide diversity (varying from 0.0039 to 0.0239) was lower...

Genetic diversity of Brazilian Pantaneiro horse and relationships among horse breeds PAB
Sereno,Fabiana Tavares Pires de Souza; Sereno,José Robson Bezerra; Vega-Pla,Jose Luis; Kelly,Lucy; Bermejo,Juan Vicente Delgado.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity of Brazilian Pantaneiro horse by microsatellite markers, investigate the effect of genetic bottlenecks and estimate genetic differentiation among four horse breeds. Genetic variation was estimated through allele frequencies and mean breed heterozygosity. Nei's genetic distances among the breeds Pantaneiro, Thoroughbred, Arabian, Spanish Pure Breed (Andalusian), and Uruguay Creole were calculated, and it was used to construct an UPGMA dendrogram. Clustering at different K values was calculated to infer population structure and assign individuals to populations. Nei's distances showed a minimum distance between Pantaneiro horse and Spanish Pure Breed (0.228), and similar distances from Spanish...

Giovambattista,G; Rogberg Muñoz,A; Ripoli,M.V; Villegas Castagnasso,E. E; Díaz,S; Posik,D. M; Lirón,J.P; Carino,M.H; Goszczynski,D.

Mitochondrial DNA D-loop sequence variation among 5 maternal lines of the Zemaitukai horse breed Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cothran,E. Gus; Juras,Rytis; Macijauskiene,Vale.
Genetic variation in Zemaitukai horses was investigated using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing. The study was performed on 421 bp of the mitochondrial DNA control region, which is known to be more variable than other sections of the mitochondrial genome. Samples from each of the remaining maternal family lines of Zemaitukai horses and three random samples for other Lithuanian (Lithuanian Heavy Draught, Zemaitukai large type) and ten European horse breeds were sequenced. Five distinct haplotypes were obtained for the five Zemaitukai maternal families supporting the pedigree data. The minimal difference between two different sequence haplotypes was 6 and the maximal 11 nucleotides in Zemaitukai horse breed. A total of 20 nucleotide differences compared...

Morphometric characteristics of the Mangalarga Marchador horse breed determined by nonlinear models PAB
Souza,Felipe Amorim Caetano de; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Cunha,Fabiana Oliveira; Ribeiro,Rafaela Aparecida; Muniz,Fabiana Rezende; Meirelles,Sarah Laguna Conceição; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Moura,Raquel Silva.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the development of the morphometric characteristics of Mangalarga Marchador horses through nonlinear models. The transversal method was used to collect data on height at the withers (HW), body length (BL), and thoracic (TP) and cannon (CP) perimeters from 200 horses (75 males and 125 non-pregnant females), aged between 6 and 153 months. The parameters of the Brody, Gompertz, logistic, and von Bertalanffy nonlinear models were estimated using the R software. Models were compared and selected using the coefficient of determination, the residual standard deviation, and the corrected Akaike information criterion. For adult females, HW, BL, TP, and CP ranged between 146.45-148.34, 148.59-151.64,...
